So Many Ways We Can Hide (The Esther Song)

by Girls in Trouble

/

about

Girls in Trouble is an indie-folk/art-pop song cycle about the complicated lives of Biblical women. This is the Esther song.

Esther is a young, secretly Jewish queen in ancient Persia. Her husband, the King, has declared that all Jews must be put to death. Esther risks her life by approaching the king to reveal her identity to her King, resulting in the survival of her people. What if her action symbolizes all of our ability to courageously reveal our vulnerability to the world, to accept ourselves exactly as we are?

So Many Ways We Can Hide (the Esther Song)
by Girls in Trouble / Alicia Jo Rabins

Lift up your scepter to me, my Lord, so that I might speak my mind

So many ways you can be, my Lord

Will you be kind

Will you be cruel

You can be monarch and still play the fool

My people’s different from yours, my Lord, does that have to be wrong?

The blacksmith he works at his forge, my Lord,

The singer her song

When it’s your turn will you be king or pawn?

And when they tell our story

A thousand years or more from now

Will you still feel the glory

Of whether some poor man bowed down to you

When you’re bones in the ground

I’ll be there too – it’s what we humans do

So many ways we can hide, my Lord,

And only one way to be known

Show me the pain that’s inside you,

I’ll show you my own

We’ll make a world where we won’t be alone
